About Kane

Kane joined Guildford Chambers as a tenant following the successful completion of his pupillage in April 2024. He is building his practice in all areas of family law and has already developed significant experience in representing clients at all stages in private child law proceedings. This includes cases relating to external relocation, special guardianship orders as well as complex private law cases that involve intractable contact disputes, rule 16.4 guardians and local authority intervention.

Kane prides himself in adopting a personable and friendly approach with clients and recognises the immense stress and psychological burden that family court proceedings often cause. He endeavours to provide advice that is clear and accessible and is committed to advancing his clients’ cases robustly and fearlessly.

Kane has on numerous occasions successfully pursued and resisted applications for non-molestation and occupation orders under the Family Law Act 1996 on behalf of clients on both an interim and final basis.

He has also obtained favourable outcomes for clients at first appointments and FDRs in financial remedy proceedings and is seeking to continue building his practice in this area.

Prior to starting pupillage, Kane studied on the Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) Bar Course in one of its earliest cohorts following its formation. He completed his LLB degree at the University of Surrey in Guildford achieving a first-class grade. Studying in Guildford during his undergraduate years has given Kane a familiarity with the legal community in Surrey and he is keen to contribute to Guildford Chambers’ already excellent connection with local firms and individuals.

Kane is committed to improving access to justice and has volunteered with the Free Representation Unit (FRU) in the past whilst he was a student. In this capacity, he assisted parties in overturning decisions regarding Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit entitlement. He is also a volunteer with Advocate and undertakes pro-bono work where and when possible.

Interesting cases

  • Successfully obtained an order under section 10 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 on behalf of a husband preventing an application for a final divorce order. The use of this section is predicted to rise from its position of historical neglect following the April 2022 divorce law reform.
  • Advised and represented a wife in a case involving an alleged Xydhias agreement where the husband, at the FDR hearing, sought to renege on his earlier acceptance of a without prejudice offer.
  • Successfully persuaded the court to dismiss an application for a child arrangements order in circumstances where the parties continued to reside with one another owing to the effect of section 11(5) – (6) of the Children Act 1989 as well as after a consideration of the ‘no order’ principle.
  • Secured an order for indirect contact only as well as a three-year section 91(14) order on behalf of a mother, who had been the victim of coercive & controlling behaviour, in circumstances where the father had previously had a high level of direct overnight contact with the children for several years.

Further Information

Kane enjoys playing guitar, watching sports and developing his Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills in his spare time. He is also a perennially disappointed Arsenal fan.
